It was the summer of my first year of college, when I received my first letter from my wife, then my girlfriend. Before the arrival of the cellphone for everyone and the mobile internet, she went to Arizona with her family and wanted to keep in touch with me. She sent several letters about what happened each day and the landscape, but what I will never forget is the feeling that getting one of her letters brought to me. It made me feel special and one of a kind.
“Not surprising,” you might say. We were dating, that's true, but it was not the letters that initially stood out. It was the envelopes.
“What? The envelope? How do you make an envelope standout?”
The envelope was made from last year's calendar. It was a hit with me and it will be treasured by your family and friends. This is the perfect way to recycle your old calendars or magazines into something that everyone will love. My wife and I make these envelopes for every occasion. Feel free to try it.
Here's how to do it:
Find an envelope, Make a template
Every card comes with it's very own envelope template, the envelope. To use the envelope that came with your card, carefully open the envelope along it's seams and fold it out so that it lies flat.
Use the flat sheet that was your envelope to create a template to make new envelopes. If you are using a calendar to create the envelope, there is usually a heavy paperboard cover. The cover makes a good template guide. Cereal boxes work great too. Carefully trace around the shape of the envelope onto paperboard. Cut out the shape, and you have created your template guide.
(You could just use your original envelope to trace the new envelopes, but if you are planning to make several, a paperboard template holds up better.)
Find the right page, Trace the template
This is where you can express your creative genius! Take your calendar page and place the template on it, then trace the outline of the envelope and cut it out. If you have a calendar that has a great central picture, make sure that your envelope's front is centered over it. If the calendar is impressionistic, then you can put the template anywhere!
Fold the envelope
Align your new envelope over the original envelope. Use the seams as a guide to fold the new envelope around the original to ensure that your folds are straight. To finish the envelope, you can use transparent tape or a glue stick.
It's nearly Christmas. How are you going to send your cards? How will your Aunt Phyllis feel when she receives your card in a custom-made envelope? Try it and find out.
